Ukraine plans to significantly increase the capacity of its western border.

Details: This is envisaged by the draft Strategy for the Development of Border Infrastructure with the European Union and Moldova until 2030.

"Due to the full-scale invasion, the load on the checkpoints has increased significantly, so we need to adapt the border to the needs at hand", Derkach explained.

The border infrastructure capacity will be increased by reconstructing existing checkpoints and building new ones, including access roads.

For example, the plan is to reconstruct six border crossing points with Poland, three on the border with Slovakia, five with Romania, three with Hungary, and 11 with Moldova.

There are also plans to build new checkpoints, including Bila Tserkva-Sighetu Marmaţiei, Bila Krynytsia-Klimeuts, Ruska-Ulma, and Shepit- Izvoarele Sucevei on the border with Romania; Velyka Palad-Nagyhodos, and Dyida- Beregdaróc with Hungary.

The goals also include the introduction of joint control with neighbouring countries, the reduction of queuing time and the creation of a network of service zones.

Ukraine has already received approval from the European Commission, Derkach added. Representatives of the Ministry held separate meetings with each oblast military administration to agree on priorities and joint plans for border development.
