Details: Anna, 17, from the city of Lviv, won the second gold and third medal of her career at the World Junior Cup after winning the highest award in Laupheim and bronze in Tbilisi in the 2023/24 season.
On her path to the top four, Maksymenko triumphed over six opponents, including American Felicity Sebastian (15:11) in the quarter-finals. Sebastian had earlier edged out another Ukrainian, Emily Conrad, in a close contest (15:13) to secure her spot.
In the semi-finals, after trailing 10:12, Maksymenko fought back to secure a dramatic 15:13 victory over Polish epee fencer Cecylia Cieslik. In the gold medal match, Maksymenko, having led 7:0, dominated the contest and defeated multiple European Cadet and Junior Championships medallist Greta Gachalyi from Hungary with a commanding 15:7 score.
Background: Earlier, reports indicated that Olha Kharlan, a two-time Olympic champion and four-time medallist, unexpectedly lost in the round of 32 at the Grand Prix in Orleans.
