Details: Johnson emphasised that prior to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainians could not reasonably expect NATO membership soon because "the reality was that the French were very much against it, the Germans were very much against it, not to mention the Hungarians and others."

Quote from Boris Johnson: "It was not on the international agenda. There could be no invitation to NATO for Ukraine. But the paradox is that Putin's invasion, his barbaric decision to do it, has now, I think, made it [Ukraine's membership in NATO - ed.] a moral and strategic imperative."

Details: However, the former UK PM says that the current problem is that this issue is not being actively discussed.

Quote from Boris Johnson: "I don't hear anyone saying that when this catastrophe is over, the solution should be Ukraine's membership in NATO. People have stopped talking about it. And I think it's a big loss because the West is retreating again."

Background:

  • In November, Johnson urged the international community to provide Ukraine with a US$500 billion loan to help it end the war and announce when Ukraine would become a NATO member.
  • He also said British troops might be deployed in Ukraine if US President-elect Donald Trump cuts military aid to Kyiv.
