Details: The new US military aid package is being provided under the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA), which enables weapons to be transferred directly from US Army stockpiles.

The package includes ammunition for HIMARS systems, 155mm and 105mm artillery shells, 60mm and 81mm mortar rounds, unmanned aerial systems, Javelin and AT-4 anti-tank systems, and tube-launched, optically tracked, wire-guided (TOW) anti-tank missiles.

Ukraine will also receive small arms and ammunition, explosive munitions, equipment for chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) protection, and spare parts and ancillary equipment.

Quote: "The United States will continue to work together with some 50 Allies and partners through the Ukraine Defense Contact Group and its associated Capability Coalitions to meet Ukraine's urgently needed battlefield requirements and defend against Russian aggression."

Background:

  • Earlier, it was reported that US President Joe Biden has approved the supply of anti-personnel mines to Ukraine, which could help strengthen Ukrainian forces’ defences against advancing Russian occupation troops.
  • The Biden administration additionally plans to submit a request to Congress for new aid for Ukraine for the fiscal year 2025.
