The agreement stipulates that foreign citizens trapped in the Gaza Strip by the escalation will be able to leave for Egypt through the Rafah crossing on Saturday afternoon. Qatar was also reportedly involved in the talks.

One of the sources said Israel, Hamas and the Islamic Jihad group agreed not to pose a threat or obstruct the exit of foreigners. Furthermore, negotiations are ongoing to allow humanitarian aid transport to enter the Strip through the same crossing point.

The agreement does not apply to foreigners who have been taken hostage after Hamas raids on Israeli villages.

Background:

  • Earlier, Israel announced that Palestinian civilians should leave the northern part of the Gaza Strip.
  • The First Minister of Scotland said his wife's Palestinian parents, who live in the UK but went to visit relatives in Gaza, had been trapped because of the escalation.
