US lawmakers push for expedited LNG exports to Ukraine and Central Europe

A group of Democratic lawmakers, led by Representative Marcy Kaptur, has urged President Joe Biden to accelerate the approval process for liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports to Ukraine and other European allies. In a letter addressed to the White House, the congressmen emphasized the critical role of American LNG in bolstering energy security and reducing dependence on Russian resources in the region.

The initiative comes as Ukraine faces increasing pressure on its energy infrastructure due to Russian aggression. As the Department of Energy resumes processing applications for LNG export to non-free trade agreement countries, this congressional appeal could significantly influence the prioritization of projects aimed at supporting European allies in their quest for energy security.

The lawmakers highlighted the urgent need to assist Europe in diversifying its energy supply, particularly as contract with Gazprom on transit through Ukraine is set to expire at the end of this year.

We believe that reducing Ukraine’s dependence on Russian energy will strengthen Ukraine’s energy security and align with the broader strategic goals of diminishing Russia’s influence in the region,” stated Kaptur in the letter.

The appeal also acknowledged the Biden administration’s recent allocation of over $800 million for emergency energy needs in Ukraine, aimed at repairing war-damaged infrastructure and expanding power generation. However, the congressmen argue that expediting LNG export approvals is crucial for long-term energy security and market stability in Europe.

The letter addressed concerns about potential impacts on domestic energy prices, asserting that public interest requires balancing American consumer needs with geopolitical stability and national security interests. The lawmakers also emphasized the environmental benefits of American LNG, produced under stringent regulations, compared to alternative foreign supplies.

The initiative has garnered support from 12 Members of Congress.
