Details: Kirby noted that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly – both publicly and privately – asked for permission to strike more Russian military targets with US-supplied weapons.
Kirby acknowledged that it was understandable why Zelenskyy is doing this, as his country is under attack, but reiterated that the US would continue to talk to the Ukrainians in private.
More details: The White House spokesperson said that as of now, there are no changes in the policy on the use of US weapons by Ukraine.
Background:
- Some Western countries, primarily the US, have allowed Ukraine to use their weapons to strike Russia, but only in a limited geographical area.
- Last month, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine was gradually changing the West's position on strikes on military targets in Russia's rear and was already receiving "positive signals" regarding the expansion of permission to use weapons provided by Western allies.
- He recently said the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ operation in Kursk Oblast might not have happened if the West had not imposed restrictions on strikes on military targets in Russia.
