Details: Zelenskyy stated that on Friday, he and Ukraine's diplomatic team "approved a list of new Ukrainian ambassadors".

"I have approved over 30 appointments, including Nariman Dzhelial to Türkiye, Alona Hetmanchuk as Ukraine’s representative to NATO, and Andrii Melnyk as Ukraine’s representative to the UN. These and other decrees will be formalised shortly, in line with diplomatic procedures," Zelenskyy announced.

Nariman Dzhelial, Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, was released from Russian captivity at the end of June 2024. Ukraine's previous ambassador to Türkiye, Vasyl Bodnar, was reassigned to the post of ambassador to Poland in the autumn.

Alona Hetmanchuk, an expert in American studies, is the Director of the New Europe Center, an Associate Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council of the United States, and a regular contributor to European Pravda. Nataliia Halibarenko, who had held the position since July 2021, is now Ukraine's representative to NATO.

Andrii Melnyk, a former ambassador of Ukraine to Germany, is now serving as Ukraine's Ambassador to Brazil. He has been replaced with Serhii Kyslytsia, who had been Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the United Nations since December 2019.

Background:

  • Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, appointed in early September, announced several personnel changes and a revision of the country's foreign policy strategy. In early November, President Zelenskyy confirmed that replacements and appointments were being prepared.
  • In response to a request from Ukrainian news outlet Babel, Ukraine's Foreign Ministry reported that nearly 30 Ukrainian embassies were without ambassadors.
