Zelenskyy congratulates Trump on “historic landslide” US presidential victory in “excellent” phone call

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, meets with former US President Donald Trump in New York on 27 September 2024.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone conversation with US President-elect Donald Trump following his victory in the US election, Zelenskyy announced on X in the early hours of 7 November.

The US presidential election took place on 5 November, with former president Republican Donald Trump defeating incumbent vice-president Democrat Kamala Harris early the following day. Before the elections, Harris was expected to continue the Biden Administration’s support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia, while Trump frequently pledged to cut US aid for Ukraine and push for peace negotiations.

The Ukrainian President wrote:

I had an excellent call with President [Donald Trump] and congratulated him on his historic landslide victory—his tremendous campaign made this result possible. I praised his family and team for their great work.

Zelenskyy noted that both leaders “agreed to maintain close dialogue and advance our cooperation,” emphasizing that “strong and unwavering US leadership is vital for the world and for a just peace.”

Earlier the same day, former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, elected amid Russia’s initial invasion in 2014 and serving until Zelenskyy’s election in 2019, also congratulated Trump on his victory, praising the campaign as “brilliant, extremely competitive, and ultimately effective.” Poroshenko expressed hope that Trump’s presidency would help end Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and reinforce the strategic partnership between Kyiv and Washington. He emphasized Ukraine’s role as a reliable ally and voiced confidence in the continuation of bipartisan US support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.

Later on Pryamyi TV channel, Poroshenko dismissed fears of Trump’s return, highlighting productive cooperation with Trump’s administration during his own presidency. He noted key US support under Trump, such as delivering Javelins and other military aid, imposing sanctions to halt Nord Stream 2, and backing Ukraine’s path to Orthodox Church independence. Poroshenko expressed confidence that Ukraine’s partnership with the US will remain strong under any administration.
