Quote: "Trump told me and then spoke publicly about it... he will do everything to end the war this year. I told him that we were his partner. We are in this war, we know all the painful places. We understand how painful it is for us, we lost our people (this is the biggest loss for us).

We want to end the war this year, but not just quickly, but fairly and, above all, reliably for all of us, for Ukrainians. We want them to return home, live in safety, and work. I think this is the most important thing. At least, we will do everything we can for this."

Background:

  • US President Donald Trump has once again promised to end the war in Ukraine and instructed his team to organise a call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin to arrange a meeting after his inauguration.
  • US Senator Marco Rubio, Donald Trump's choice for Secretary of State, said that in order for the Russian-Ukrainian war to end, both countries must make concessions.
  • At a meeting of the Russian Security Council on 20 January, Putin and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reaffirmed Russia's readiness for peace talks with the new administration of US President Donald Trump. At the same time, Putin stressed that any peaceful settlement should be based on "eliminating the root causes" of the conflict, which, according to him, includes meeting Russia's strict demands.
  • These demands include Ukraine's permanent "neutral" status, its non-membership in NATO, strict limits on the size of the Ukrainian army, and the removal of the Ukrainian government from power. According to the Institute for the Study of War, this is effectively a demand for Ukraine's complete surrender
